2001 After some days of tuning up, the cicadas are finally in chorus. Now, rather than individually rasping individuals, two or three cicadas will cycle tone together. This is much of what makes cicada sounds both so insistant and so opressive for some people. You don't just hear one or two cicadas, you hear a drone of locally distinct but sonically united cicadas. The sound is intense and seems to come from everywhere, and it rises and falls every one to two seconds.
